Flight To Mars
FLIGHT TO MARS is largely an account of the inception and development of the Beagle 2 Mars Lander by its scientist-designer Colin Pillinger. In 1996, after NASA speculated on the discovery of Martian microfossils and revealed that water percolated through the Martian substructure, he and his colleagues set out to design a more compact and efficient vehicle for exploring the surface.
Mars cooled earlier than the earth and it is conceivable that the elements of life traveled from there to earth. There appear to be two kinds of channels, one for larger floods of water, and smaller "offshoot" canals. The Beagle 2 mole is designed to probe for rock chemistry by using a microscope, a grinder, a core sampler, and other implements to see if concepts of evolution apply also to Mars. By these means they hope to answer the ultimate question: "Is there life outside earth?"
