Leafy Sea Dragons

One of the most intricate and adorned of all sea horses is the leafy sea dragon. Known internationally for its beauty and impressive appearance, this rare and secretive fish is only found in the cold waters off southern Australia. Sea dragons are virtually impossible to spot in their underwater sanctuary. They are masters of camouflage, lurking amid the seaweed on the bottom, never venturing to the surface. Little is known of the biology or lifestyle of this tiny fish, however, individual animals can be identified by unique color patterns on their snouts and they appear to five out their lives within a very small area, never traveling far from home. But because of their beauty these vulnerable creatures are hotly sought after by collectors around the world. Biologists are now concerned about fragile populations and a decline in numbers. This documentary joins researchers for an intimate look into the strange world of the sea dragon, a world that has been rarely captured on film. It includes, in fascinating close-up, beautiful footage of the male species giving birth to hundreds of tiny young.
