COUPLETS OF THE TOREADOR is the prelude to the opera. It opens as a lively work full of vigor before becoming more tranquil. CARMEN TORERO is the celebrated toreador march that portrays the exciting life of a bullfighter. The percussion is given full rein in this vivacious tune with its reprise. CARMEN SUITES contains a number of tunes from the opera framed by a gentle passage of subdued string background. It emphasizes slow reminisces of the Habanera theme, played by carillon. MEMORIES OF ALHAMBRA is a meditative work reflecting the beauties of a Moorish palace. Francesco Tarrega (1854-1909) was called the "Chopin of the Guitar."
