More than half of the world’s population depends on the rivers that
are fed by the ice and snow that form in mountain ranges. Some
mountains are formed by volcanic action, but mountain ranges
result from the compression of the Earth’s Tectonic Plates. The
Himalayas are the highest mountain system, and the youngest.
