The tradegy of the Civil War is described in the words of one of its youngest soldiers, Elijah Morris, who witnessed the war first-hand. It began with the shelling of Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1861 after that state and six others had seceded from the Union. The four years of bitter conflict pitted state against state, neighbor against friend, and brother against brother, and cost the lives of more Americans than any other American war.
