Glenn Murcutt is a major figure in world architecture. In 1992 he received Finland's Alvar Aalto Medal-architecture's highest honor. Murcutt has won a remarkable reputation for an architecture of high craft and originality. His trademark corrugated steel sheeting is expressed as an elevated pavilion which in turn is an inspired response to climate, site and client requirements. Murcutt is a sole practitioner who has generated a breathtaking volume and range of work. He is now clearly in the vanguard of an architecture which responds evocatively to place. Touch the Earth Lightly is a documentary which records one man's rare ability to make inspired forms and celebrate a special affection for this planet and its people. This film documents his return to Papua New Guinea where he re-visits a part of his childhood. It also displays a selection of his work from around Australia as well as presenting the views of commentators on the challenges which confront urban growth and design.
