The Middle East in 1900 was largely dominated by the Ottoman Empire. When that empire sided with Germany against Britain in World War I the British incited the Arabs to rebel against their Ottoman rulers. To lure the United States into alliance with Britain the Jewish Zionists were promised their historical homeland. But neither promise was honored by Britain after the war, and both Arabs and Jews felt betrayed, coming to conflict with each other and with Britain, which sought to rule the Middle East as its colony. World War II brought the Holocaust and the birth of Israel - and a string of consequent wars and uneasy truces.Release
