However, it is such an extraordinary work and has had such influence that it is not surprising that he wrote much else and lived an interesting and unusual life. Born to Protestant parents in Dublin, he attended Trinity College before working in England as a sort of advisor to chief government officials. Returning to Ireland as Dean of St. Patrick's Catherdral he became involved with two women, one of whom he may have married. Preserved letters revel a great deal about them. Swift's great knowledge of humanity is explained by his life and background.
