From an early age Zola determined to be a writer. His childhood and youth were spent in Aix en Provence; his closest friend was painter Cezanne (whose story is told in our Impressionist series). Despite failing his final school exams he got a job with the publishing house of Hatchette and therefore knew just how to publicize his first novel. The realism of his novels made him a great favoraite with the young and a working class just beginning to benefit from education. He was also a great supporter of Cezanne and Mante. His accidental death in 1902 at the height of his powers found France mourning a great champion of the individual. His work has influenced worldwide the development of the novel and the cinema.
