Voltaire

The life of Voltaire proves that "The pen is mightier than the sword." In his long life he wrote novels, plays, poems, and philosophical works which embroiled him in difficulties with the absolute moarchy of eighteenth century France. His promotion of the rights of the individual brought him imprisonment in the Bastille and excile in rural France, Switzerland, and Britain. The great love of his life was a marquise renowned for her mathematical and scientific skills in an age when women rarelyhad an opppurtunity to develop their intellectual agilities. He returned in triumph in old age to Paris; his ideas remain influential in the development of democracy.
